The DBS have strict guidelines for Identity Verification, from the type of documents that are acceptable to the accuracy of the information on the documents.
As part of these guidelines, it is stated that “the identity checker cannot verify the identity of a relative or partner, people who live in the same house as them, or a personal friend.”
As a Registered Organisation/Body, it is our responsibility to ensure that these rules are followed. Currently, this is monitored at countersigning where affected DBS submissions are rejected, which causes delays, and complications in the process.
To handle this requirement, we have made a small change to the ID verification process.
Outline of the new process
When verifying someone's documents, there is an additional checkbox stating "I am not related to {Subject name} and do not live in the same household as them"
If an Identity Verifier’s name is similar to the Subject’s name, this case will go to a member of our Compliance and Admin team for review.
If they are satisfied that there is no relation between the ID Verifier and the Subject, they will then send the DBS for countersigning.
If it is identified that that there is a relationship between the ID Verifier and the Subject, they will send Case back to your outstanding activities, and it will be flagged so that you are informed.
Flagged Case in Outstanding Activities
If the DBS needs re-verifying, it will appear in your Outstanding Activities page https://app.personnelchecks.co.uk/outstanding-activities, and flagged for your attention.

It will need to be verified by someone else in your business who is not a friend or relative of the Subject.
Once re-verified, it will be countersigned and go to the DBS.
